I'm not going to be ambitious enough to say I'll write another post before the end of the year (only four days away, and I've got two essays sitting like monkeys on my back), so here's to 2015. It's been a hell of a year with plenty of ups and downs - God, aren't I a cliche?! But it's true. As a quick round-up I've started my second year at uni (my grades actually <i>count</i> now - que horror!), spent a summer at the Conde Nast College and met some amazing people with whom I went on to set up <a href="http://www.theworldwidewardrobe.com/" target="_blank">The World Wide Wardrobe</a> (main credits to Abi though!), travelled a little, drank a lot of coffee, said goodbye to both my granny and my cat after practically a lifetime with both, got back into art (I'm no artist though!), and am now eagerly awaiting 2016. 2016, I think, will be an amazing year - I'm off on a quick holiday in January, then it's all hands on deck to survive my second semester and exams (eek!), before flying off for my year abroad... I think this quote from Tumblr best describes my attitude to next year:<br />
<br />
<i>"2016 will be a selfish year. My time will be invested on me. On
improving myself. I want to become a better person physically and
mentally."</i><br />
<br />
Anyway, enough sentimental musing - I actually got pretty excited to get this outfit on for Christmas! Winter, and especially the very end of the year, doesn't have many saving graces for me. One is faux fur, and another is that around Christmas you can wear literally as much glitter as you like and get away with it by calling it festive! I'd never get away with this dress at 1pm on any other day.. But I love it. Topshop once again struck gold (or silver as the case may be) with this sparkly leopard print body con dress. Not only was leopard <i>the</i> print of AW15, and I'm not letting go of it yet, but the dress achieved the impossible and actually gave me some real curves - yes, that's the best my petite frame is going to give! I'll admit I've shied away from body con in recent years, preferring something a little looser and more fit-and-flare, but the high neck keeps this classy and I honestly just fell in love with it. If I go anywhere for NYE the chances are I'll be busting it out again. I kept my shoes quite casual, opting for the same ankle boots I've been wearing throughout autumn and winter because, despite the sparkle-fest that is my dress, Christmas chez Kergon is fairly casual and honestly I couldn't be doing with high heels! I'm severely out of practice with them.. I also used a few of my presents to complete the outfit - an Alexander McQueen ring, and my new Naked Smoky palette to create a blue-toned smokey eye! Hop on over to my instagram <a href="https://www.instagram.com/babydolltara/" target="_blank">@babydolltara</a> to see a few more of my presents.. For now, and for 2015, I'll just leave you with a few snaps from the last few days.. <br />

Being at home for the Christmas holidays not only has me enjoying a break from early starts (unfortunately not from essays though), but it's got me thinking. There are certain things I always do in December, certain things I've done every year that make me look forward to the break and keep me going throughout the longest, darkest days. I may not be the most festive, but I definitely have my little end-of-year celebrations! So I thought with today's outfit I'd share my top ten December must-dos - I'm ticking them off as we speak. Today's outfit is mostly remarkable because I haven't been forced to wear a coat, since it's actually quite a balmy winter especially down in Somerset! I got away with my current favourite jumper (kudos, Topshop) and this print skirt, along with only one pair of tights - I'm dreading January back in Birmingham... I loved feeling a little brighter and a little less weighed down today, and I'm sure this combination will reappear.. Anyway, here is an abbreviated version of my December to-do list..</div>

<i>Wear a Christmas jumper</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I
don't go in for those supremely tacky Primark specialties, but around
Christmas it's always time for a festive jumper (or socks, or a hat, or
leggings...)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>Be with your family</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Christmas
is the best excuse to get together - life is so busy that often family
get neglected, especially the non-immediate relatives, so spend a bit of
time with your family this season whether it's a full-on festive Xmas
day, or just a nice quiet visit. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>Watch Christmas movies</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There
are some films that have become my staple Xmas viewing (and can't be
watched any other time of year) - it's not Christmas unless I've watched
Elf, Love Actually, and The Muppets Christmas Carol!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>Give presents</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
All
too often Xmas becomes about what you get, but I love to spend time
planning and purchasing my gifts to give because these holidays are all
about showing your loved ones how much you care.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>Eat Xmas food</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'll
admit I'm getting annoyed that Christmas food appears in about
September, but I do love it - mince pies, stuffing, roast, selection
boxes, celebrations, lindt....</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>Go for a walk</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When
I've got time I love going for a walk (probably because I live in the
countryside), especially if it has snowed, or I can take my film camera
out!<i> </i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>Have a fire</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Another
tradition stemming probably from my childhood is that winter is always
associated with a log fire, and I love sitting beside mine in these
dark, bitter days.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>Treat myself</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Yes,
I've spent too much money on presents. Yes, I still have a few weeks
until loan day. Yes, I'm saving up for a year abroad. But honestly, it's
dark, cold, damp and grey - if a bit of shopping and a few splurges can
cheer me up then it's worth it! Recently I've treated myself in Lush
(and may do a review once I've road tested it all)!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>Be thankful</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Lastly,
it's always worth reflecting on all that is good and fortunate in your
life. Everyone has difficult times, but there is always something to
love about life (even just the little things), and I don't believe
anyone should take anything for granted. We're all lucky in one way or
another, and hey - we made it through another year!</div>

If there's one thing I love about winter, it's faux fur. There's a reason faux fur is a perennial catwalk hit during A/W shows, and that's because it's fun, cosy and ever-so fabulously practical for the British winter. For me it's the saving grace of the cold weather, and just about the only thing that could get me wishing for chilly days - I bought this coat a few weeks back and waited impatiently for the days to grow cold enough to wear it! It's the perfect winter statement, and feels like a hug wrapping me up against the brisk wind. And why stop at one piece of faux fur? I've got not only my gorgeous coat but this faux fur headband to fend off the chill. In summer I'm obsessed with flowers in my hair, so in winter of course I turn to faux fur.. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I wrapped up in this simple yet eye-catching outfit yesterday to venture out to the Christmas market - one of my favourite seasonal occurrences. I'm not exactly the biggest fan of Christmas (I'm no Grinch, but I don't get as excited as some!), but I can't resist the markets - cute lights, hot cider, yummy food, and retail therapy... what's not to like? It's only 20 days to Christmas now, so it was probably time I started getting a handle on my shopping and appreciating it before it's over...</div>

I'm usually the kind of girl that sticks to her old favourites (click <a href="http://foreveranoverdresser.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/my-makeup-essentials.html" target="_blank">here</a> for my makeup essentials) and I tend to repurchase the products that work for me, meaning I rarely test out new products. However, with winter in full swing - and all the skin problems associated with it, like dryness, redness and paleness - I decided I wanted to try some new items. So today I'm reviewing my two most recent makeup ventures... <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwJrArnAp1917hDx3XLzoU9LMeVLlDXyZ-fGP6aTMdn2P7cbKw1jaJi3t4RBujMUHjxif_zFBaVQ7fmfbb-DxKehyphenhyphen9-hXDN31F9QndDB_pERkmqfLntBtSGSTFP3N-snxHhYuCtDPPqwGd/s1600/DSCF7935e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwJrArnAp1917hDx3XLzoU9LMeVLlDXyZ-fGP6aTMdn2P7cbKw1jaJi3t4RBujMUHjxif_zFBaVQ7fmfbb-DxKehyphenhyphen9-hXDN31F9QndDB_pERkmqfLntBtSGSTFP3N-snxHhYuCtDPPqwGd/s400/DSCF7935e.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>Estee Lauder Double Wear Light - 01</u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've heard people rave about Estee Lauder's Double Wear for years (one of my favourite bloggers/Youtubers, Anna Saccone, swears by it) and was always curious to try it. So as winter set in and my skin got increasingly temperamental - aka paler, drier and red in patches - I needed better coverage, and my BB cream just wasn't cutting it anymore. I opted for the Double Wear Light because in the past most "real" foundations have dried my skin out and looked too caked on (not what I was going for at all!) and I know the importance of letting my skin breathe. And since I'm so pale at the moment - I'm practically translucent - I got matched to the lightest shade.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Having bought this I tried it out the very next day and was absolutely amazed. Upon first wear my skin instantly appeared smoother, and there was no trace of redness showing through. Even though this is light it has perfect coverage and also gave me a natural glow, instantly making me look more awake. I wish I'd tried this years ago! I'm hooked. I also noticed after about a week of wear that my skin in general had cleared up - it wasn't dry or red - and I have to attribute it to this foundation because it is so moisturizing. It also fulfilled its claim of lasting for up to 15 hours, which is ideal for my long days at uni or work. I have to admit I don't wear it every day, especially if I'm not going anywhere too special (like the shops, or a quick walk) because my skin can get a bit oily with full foundation on, and needs at least a day a week without makeup altogether - oh the joys of combination skin! I would recommend this to everyone though (and have been!) because its combination of coverage and moisturising really saves my skin and it is definitely worth the investment.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>Revolution Ultra Sculpt & Contour Kit - Ultra Fair 01</u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Contouring has suddenly become the biggest beauty trend, overtaking the need to get your eyebrows on fleek, and I hadn't even dipped my toes into the ocean of contouring kits around because honestly I was worried any bronzing product on my ghostly pale skin would only have me looking orange or obviously fake. This kit, however, was such a bargain that I couldn't resist, and I'd been looking for a way to wake up my face and define my cheekbones as I get ever paler..</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This kit is in Ultra Fair 01, but I didn't believe it at first as the bronzer looks quite dark. And honestly, the first time I attempted to contour was a complete disaster! But I've learned that this bronzer needs a very light hand and a sweep or two at most. I haven't used the blusher as I'm still loyal to my Nars Amour, but my favourite part of this kit is the highlighter - a quick sweep on the top of my cheekbones really makes a difference, and I also put a little under my brows to open my eyes. I would recommend this palette to anyone who is trying out contouring - it's cheap, simple to use, and while it's not the best in the market it's very accessible. I love it, and have been using it every day (quite sparingly on the bronzer) to wake up my skin.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyUaB4iBhFK9xmLtQswr6wb-9DoI7T7NqvQDy4I4Q13wz7mNntXHmyj2ZH1A7rUcjSWawXwlW4FX21lJXNz32GGuijC2mLyx_exEy1NIFlESnSxCLt82dk2Wd5xl56bLfZJ7l4QkwEt25S/s1600/tumblr_nyoss1y4eY1rn1553o1_540.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyUaB4iBhFK9xmLtQswr6wb-9DoI7T7NqvQDy4I4Q13wz7mNntXHmyj2ZH1A7rUcjSWawXwlW4FX21lJXNz32GGuijC2mLyx_exEy1NIFlESnSxCLt82dk2Wd5xl56bLfZJ7l4QkwEt25S/s400/tumblr_nyoss1y4eY1rn1553o1_540.jpg" width="323" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Finally a quick snap of me wearing these products - you can see how even my skintone appears thanks to Double Wear Light, and the contour palette gives me just enough definition. This is also my staple winter makeup look, so I might post a quick how-to if I either run out of outfits (or fail to get pictures thanks to the tiny window of decent lighting in winter days) or if anyone is interested!</div>

<br />
I'm not entirely sure where this year is gone, but now it's definitely winter and we're starting the ever-increasing run-up to Christmas.. and it's absolutely freezing in the West Midlands! Everything I'm loving at the moment is either faux fur, knitted, or looks good with two pairs of tights. So this faux fur gilet has got a bit of a re-style this year, and probably for the last time because it's now too cold to even just wear this! I love the pastel pink shade for winter though, so I couldn't let the season pass without wearing it. Dark colours always seem to overtake my love for pastels in the darker days, but every so often I like to make light shades the perfect foil to the dark (seriously, every year the fact it gets dark at 4pm shocks me) and this pastel pink and white outfit was perfect to lighten up the grey sky. I'm also in love with this jumper and love the stripes to add a pop of print to the otherwise monochrome outfit. I suppose the one saving grace of having to drag myself to campus every day (when I'd much rather be warm in bed) is that I have to come up with new outfits every day and be creative through the winter...<br />

Jacket, Skirt & Bag - Topshop</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Boots & Top - Missguided</div>
<br />
Winter has come upon us swiftly this year - as I write it's about 4 degrees outside and I am bitterly dreading the walk to work - and so I've had to try to wrap up warm. It's not easy considering the wind whips through Birmingham, breaking umbrellas and practically giving me a free facelift, but I'm doing my best. And whatever they may say about this being the warmest November for a few years, I certainly don't remember it being this cold last year! My winter wardrobe is firmly in play now - I've added my faux fur collar, and started wearing long sleeves every day, but one of the pieces I've been living in is these gorgeous thigh high boots. Not only do they look good with all of my favourite skirts and allow me to keep some of my favourites from the warmer seasons going, but they provide an alternative to the black tights that quickly become my winter uniform, and I can even wear thick socks under them for extra warmth. It's totally worth risking a few inches of exposed thigh to the wind! I'd 100% recommend a pair to anyone this winter, and they'll see you through to spring as well. Mine are from Missguided, complete with tassels lacing the back for that seventies nod, and are probably the only flat shoes you will catch me in. This outfit saw me pair them up with my favourite autumnal skirt (I'm a sucker for that falling-leaves colour palette), a high necked black top, my trusty biker jacket and finally my favourite lipstick of the season. I'm not likely to be loving winter any time soon - I'd much rather be on holiday, or at least tucked up in bed with Netflix and my electric blanket, than fighting through the chill to get to class - but these boots are making the dark days a little lighter.<br />

Plenty of people do month-by-month favourites, but I'm probably not consistent enough to start posting favourites that regularly (and probably too much of a poor student to have new items to share every month - gotta stretch that loan!) so here are my autumn favourites. Recently I posted the reasons why I love autumn - convincing myself more than anyone - but these are the specific products and pieces that keep me <i>fall</i>-ing for this season.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoEBmUnxN5b_INiFqROAlZZYCq1vyK5Cy7w5lfWfL5T3E7xilrVGVL-k_2qbDHKwBJjmtQTVlAWWVTy8sv0JX00G6RRhsZhjKnCpMjCpFpvP3TcgWKPAEIe2gRBQO4rswcXbdZzQnozfZW/s1600/DSCF7841e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoEBmUnxN5b_INiFqROAlZZYCq1vyK5Cy7w5lfWfL5T3E7xilrVGVL-k_2qbDHKwBJjmtQTVlAWWVTy8sv0JX00G6RRhsZhjKnCpMjCpFpvP3TcgWKPAEIe2gRBQO4rswcXbdZzQnozfZW/s640/DSCF7841e.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>MAC Cremesheen Lipstick (Party Line) </u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This isn't a new shade, but I've been waiting to wear it again since early spring (and since I had my pink dipdye, with which it clashed horribly) and recently I've been wearing it way too much. Something about the darkening days makes me want to toughen up my makeup, and XXX is the perfect shade - a dark berry which works perfectly with my propensity for all-black outfits in autumn/winter.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeq2sUzcEj82waXhYjlcvZ5Zm-Aq_xLRFT9G6r9ggXgoKSCt1iTHN6lJZ13OVmsYcImax279UzgBaQOqFmkWEg4DMesgSE21y1X43jFYlFsBOUSUEkZTIuY7WK-pUOhaq6zS_o90rz0Y10/s1600/DSCF7802e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeq2sUzcEj82waXhYjlcvZ5Zm-Aq_xLRFT9G6r9ggXgoKSCt1iTHN6lJZ13OVmsYcImax279UzgBaQOqFmkWEg4DMesgSE21y1X43jFYlFsBOUSUEkZTIuY7WK-pUOhaq6zS_o90rz0Y10/s640/DSCF7802e.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>ASOS boots</u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I bought these boots (and another pair) when student loan came in and I'm <i>so </i>glad I treated myself. They're fairly classic and noncommittal, but this just means they go with everything! I've been wearing them pretty much every day, from lectures to nights out, and they are perfect - so comfortable, chunky enough to handle splashing through puddles yet cute enough that I can pair them with skirts, and the heel adds just enough height to keep me from looking as short as I really am. If you're looking for the perfect ankle boot, look no further.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>Faux Fur Pompom - Topshop</u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The easiest way to ease into faux fur without sweating in lectures - it's not that cold yet! - this baby has been sitting on my bag every day, and makes me a little more excited to be carrying it into class full of textbooks.</div>
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>Naked 3 Palette - Urban Decay</u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've been converted from the Naked 2 by the gorgeous tones of this palette. Yes, I've had it quite a while, but right now I'm all about that rose gold. The lighter tones are perfect for day, while the darker shades mean you can layer up a smoky bronze eye that matches the autumn leaves and takes you right through the night. I think everyone needs this palette!</div>
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>Striped Rollneck - Topshop</u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's no surprise that my fave jumper comes from Topshop (I confess, I'm addicted) but sweater weather is upon us and my current knitwear obsession comes in the form of this striped jumper. It's skinny, long-sleeved, and keeps away the bite of the wind - I'm in love!</div>
<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>Dry Shampoo - Batiste</u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In this increasingly chilly weather, and with my boiler/shower on the fritz (the joys of student living, eh?) I honestly can't brave washing my hair as often as I probably should.. so enter Batiste, my perennial favourite and hair saviour! Just a few sprays keeps my hair looking fresh, and saves me from potential pneumonia - it's a win win situation.</div>
<u> </u><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibTl45-uTphxr-WtxV7cfLff1kdY6sDAsDsMGfYBvBPON9oWAHWV2sJ6UpkQ3MnEIZpSQu4eD85-_LpT9IfFQ8yYquAqbGRwDsjtECbepJJdo9aTLwcovSJAXUSKgn6y5pCSbOgZCT_oSj/s1600/DSCF7789e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibTl45-uTphxr-WtxV7cfLff1kdY6sDAsDsMGfYBvBPON9oWAHWV2sJ6UpkQ3MnEIZpSQu4eD85-_LpT9IfFQ8yYquAqbGRwDsjtECbepJJdo9aTLwcovSJAXUSKgn6y5pCSbOgZCT_oSj/s640/DSCF7789e.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>Pastel Coat - New Look</u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A year or so old now, this coat is a perennial favourite of mine and one of the pieces that gets me excited for autumn. Nothing contrasts a darkened, grey sky like pastel colours - the soft tones of autumn lend themselves to muted tones as an alternative to the all-black outfits I fall for in winter.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8iUSKlOvy8T32muSkz70e86YJnawKlOFxHpLELN-LWiIwG01JhjZSIQWV6nPL9-hFUqe-atnnQt7VRxwIY-rKwOvEU6An3LdBYdE6PgfGtdtZFSsi2Gm5_lNB8z7L6qqeTsPASAMdFtxh/s1600/DSCF7849e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8iUSKlOvy8T32muSkz70e86YJnawKlOFxHpLELN-LWiIwG01JhjZSIQWV6nPL9-hFUqe-atnnQt7VRxwIY-rKwOvEU6An3LdBYdE6PgfGtdtZFSsi2Gm5_lNB8z7L6qqeTsPASAMdFtxh/s640/DSCF7849e.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>Succulents/Cacti</u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Since we're not allowed pets in my rented house (*sob*), I decided over the summer to get plants for my room. I love nature, and while I adore flowers they just seemed too high maintenance considering how busy I am, and the fact I'm often away for a few weeks at a time! So I chose these - sempervivum, a succulent and a cactus - because they are a gorgeous hue all year round, and remarkably low maintenance. And yes, I've named them.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>Pens - Muji</u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of the ways I destress and take a break from the mountain of academic work that uni throws at me is to journal - draw, paint, write, sketch - and I'm now a self-confessed stationary addict. Muji has by far the best pens with a wide selection of cute colours and thicknesses, perfect for creating pretty pages or simply writing up your notes in a more attractive way. I'm also obsessed with Moleskine journals, but that's another story....</div>

<i> "I choose not the suffocating anesthetic of the suburbs, but the violent jolt of the Capital..."</i>- Virginia Woolf, The Hours</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
On Wednesday I took a day trip to my favourite city - London. I've always loved the capital, and since spending a month studying at the Conde Nast College this summer I have been thoroughly in love with it. Even the grey weather and rain didn't phase me! I understand entirely what Virginia Woolf meant about the jolt of the capital - London is always so alive, so thrumming with the energy of all the lives lived out there, and there are always events and new places to explore. I can't wait to one day call London my home.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
To tackle the city, the early and late trains and the grim November weather, I opted for my favourite new coat, this faux fur beauty from Topshop. It's not quite Miuccia's SS16 bright coloured fur, but it's a gorgeous grey that goes with everything and it's so soft and warm that I am actually craving snow just so I can truly appreciate it. It perfectly lightened up my otherwise dark ensemble, indulging my love for tartan borne of Alexander McQueen's Widows of Culloden.. As much as I love pastels in autumn/winter, I am always caught by darker shades as the sky darkens and I can't help but fall for berry lips and all-black everything - this outfit was a balance, and one I'm sure I'll be repeating.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'll leave you all now with a few touristy/cheesy shots of me in London, enjoying my favourite city.. until next time, London..</div>

Clearly I still can't resist the allure of Topshop (I was drawn like a moth to a flame only this morning) so it's no surprise it has given me my newest favourite jumper.. this gorgeous piece of knitted goodness comes in several other colours, but I fell for the stripes. They're classic, chic, and perennially stylish, so I anticipate wearing this jumper until it's so warm I'm melting out of it! And I can even pretend that it was a practical purchase, since the rollneck keeps away the bitter Birmingham wind - seriously, I've broken at least 2 umbrellas, and it starts to feel like a free facelift if you walk into it.. For this first wearing I've paired it with my pink vintage skirt to keep it light, and layered up with tights, ankle boots, and my biker jacket - I fall back on black accessories in autumn, which is another reason why I love pastel clothes right now!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is just a quick post because I'm taking a break from essays and grammar, and I feel bad for how sporadically I've been posting.. This leads me onto a quick piece of advice for anyone currently being swallowed up by university (seriously, about now the essays hit and you've got your extracurriculars sorted, so there's never enough time in the day) - remember to take breaks! Even if it seems like you've got so much work you'll never get through it, and that there's not enough time, make sure you take a few well-placed pauses. Your brain will only become exhausted if you overwork it, and then nothing you produce will be your best work. So take a few breaks. If you've been stuck inside all day, go for a walk or go to the shop; if you've been writing take a break and have a drink or a snack or just watch tv; and if you feel like all your time is going on academia try to keep your hobbies up, be it sport or art or music. Towards the end of the term I might post some study tips, as I feel I'm really getting the hang of it! And stay tuned for my autumn favourites....</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
It's officially knitwear season, and the only consolation for the downturn in weather is the chance to wrap myself up in absurdly snuggly clothes. It might just be the West Midlands, but the wind is harsh and the temperatures are dropping and all I want is knitwear and coats! It's still absurdly warm in my classes though (thankyou, UOB, for aggressively warm heating) which means I have to be sensible - there's no use wearing a gorgeous chunky knit and ending up sweating in your lesson, or on the walk in if you're running a bit late! So easing myself into the wintery pursuit of strong layering I've gone for a fairly light knit jumper under my favourite coat. Pastels are a bit of a year-round obsession for me, and I refuse to pack them away in winter - nothing makes the grey sky easier to take than a bit of colour, and pastels keep me looking forward to spring. In an attempt to not fall victim to hibernation as the days get shorter and my essays get more horrible, I've constructed a list of my favourite things about autumn/winter...</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>Sweater Weather.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It may be the point of this post, but I'm a knitwear addict.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<i>Falling Leaves.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The rich golds and oranges inspire my journaling and creativity, plus I'm such a child that I <b>love</b> crunching through them!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<i>Chai Lattes.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Everyone raves about PSL, but chai lattes will always remind me of autumn and Christmas. Maybe it's the cinnamon, maybe it's the obsession with iced drinks in the summer, but September-February will always be my chai latte season.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i> </i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<i>Daylight Saving.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Having just got an extra hour's sleep in between shifts at work, I'm really appreciating the clocks going back! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>Faux Fur.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My winter wardrobe is basically my summer wardrobe with the addition of faux fur... and I can never have enough. Only this week I bought a huge faux fur coat that's so gorgeous I actually <b>want</b> it to hit minus numbers to justify it! And I'm already lusting after a faux fur scarf...</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<i>Fires.</i></div>
I only get them when I'm at home for the holidays, but nothing beats a real fire in our wood-burner when the evenings get chilly!<br />
<br />
<i>Christmas.</i><br />
If you know me then you're probably wondering why - I don't have a tree, don't really decorate or get into the spirit, and I definitely don't get involved for religious reasons! But I love any excuse to give presents to those I love, any excuse to eat more chocolate than I can physically bear, and I can't wait for the Christmas films to start.<br />
<br />
These are a few of my favourite things about the coming seasons - and I'm going to come up with a more specific Autumn Favourites post with my favourite products and items of clothing, because changing from my summer to autumn wardrobe is a big shift in aesthetic..<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Every so often (and by this I mean once or twice a year) I decide to change my hair - I seem to be incapable of going in for a trim, and always end up doing something radical! Last time the urge overtook me I ended up with my pink dipdye (which I do miss), and this time I lost about a foot of hair in favour of this shorter do! I'd had long hair for years and just felt like a real change, so I bit the bullet and went for the chop.. and I love it. Honestly, even though I still get confused when brushing my hair and am clueless for hairstyles at this length, I really love how it looks and feels. I think changing your hair is the easiest way to update your look, and it's always going to grow out! So why not be bold? I'm sure no decent hairdresser would let you do anything too hideous....</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Secondly, I'd like to announce I am head over heels with metallics! I'm sure I'll be recreating this shimmery look in the future as I loved wearing it out last night. There's something about metallics that are so glamorous, in that seventies disco way, and I spotted many on the catwalks this season. Instead of going over the top I tried to keep mine ladylike, pairing my silver tee (the newest autumn staple in my wardrobe) with a midi - full, ladylike skirts are everywhere at the moment and keep things classy! Don't worry though, I'm not oblivious to autumn - I wore my trusty leather jacket to toughen it up and beat out the chill.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Lastly, a word to anyone who reads my blog regularly (Hi, Mom!) I'm going to apologise for being so sporadic lately.. I had forgotten quite how much time uni swallows up out of my week, and as well as studying I'm working, as well as being an editorial assistant and writer for my student newspaper, and trying to squeeze in some socialising! So I'll post probably once a week to keep my looks fresh and my writing up! But if you want to see more style daily, then head over to <a href="http://theworldwidewardrobe.com/" target="_blank">the world wide wardrobe</a> for the hottest international street style - I'm sub-editor.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Jacket, Top & Skirt - Topshop<br />
Boots - Missguided</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Bag - Versace</div>
I've always been a little cautious of over-knee boots because I worried that my (already short) legs would look even shorter if I dared to put on a pair, but I've fallen in love with them this season so I had to give them a go.. Over-knee boots are everywhere, so finding my perfect pair wasn't exactly a challenge - I couldn't resist this Missguided pair with the nod to the seventies in the lace up back and cute tassels! The other deciding factor in choosing these was that I needed flat shoes to be able to walk into and around uni all day.. I know, I know, it is very unlike me to submit to practicality but when walking for around 2 hours a day just to attend class I've got to think of my poor feet. And this practical decision leads me to want to share a few of my campus tips - mostly things I've re-learned in my first week of second year!<br />
<br />
<i>Wear layers.</i><br />
It might sound silly, but until you get to know your timetable and the rooms you're in make sure you wear an outfit that can be adapted for all temperatures - even if it's sunny outside some buildings manage to be arctic, and even if it's wintery sometimes the heating can leave you sweating if all you've got on is a chunky knit.<br />
<br />
<i> </i><br />
<i>Practical shoes.</i><br />
Practical doesn't mean ugly (my boots are pretty fabulous and still comfy), but if you've got to walk a long way to campus or just switch buildings a lot you don't want to be caught in uncomfortable shoes. Blisters are no fun! So however much you love heels you might have to lower them for class, and make sure you wear a pair in before sporting them on your longest day - believe me.<br />
<i> </i><br />
<i> </i><br />
<br />
<i>Measure your laptop.</i>This might sound obvious, but before you go buying a new bag for uni (one of the best parts of the start of term is the justification for bags) measure your laptop in its case and check it will fit in whichever bag you choose!<br />
<br />
<i>Carry a few spares.</i><br />
If you've only got an hour on campus this isn't necessary, but if you're in all day make sure you've got a few spares with you in case of emergency (fashion or otherwise) - tights, plasters, snacks, chargers, and maybe even flat shoes, are all rattling around in my bag. I rarely ever need them, but I'd rather not get caught out.<br />
<br />
These are just a few things I've found make campus easier, at least from a fashion perspective. Maybe once I've got myself organised I'll post some study and organisation tips - I'm bordering on obsessed with planners and timetables and pens this year!<br />

<i>"I like my money right where I can see it.. hanging in my closet."</i> - Carrie Bradshaw</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It was love (or lust) at first sight when I saw this rare piece of Gucci heaven hiding away in a tiny vintage store in Somerset - I literally zeroed in on it when I walked in the door, and although I tried to be sensible about not explicitly needing another bag I just couldn't leave it. I even walked away and ended up going back! I didn't hit my overdraft, I had money coming in, and this was such a steal that now I have no regrets. Because what's the point of saving and saving and never treating yourself? Miss Bradshaw has the right idea - invest in things you love instead of watching a (slightly abstract) figure on a bank statement! Whether it's going out with friends, eating good food, or buying yourself pretty things you never need an excuse to spoil yourself a little bit. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I've also noticed that for a girl who proclaims to love the 40s/50s I've started to let the seventies creep into my life - maybe it's the catwalk influence (and my current obsession with Rodarte SS/16), or maybe it's the vintage gems that are surfacing, but it's noticeable now. Platform shoes, a classic Gucci handbag, and even my beloved Praktica - the 70s are undeniable both in my wardrobe and in fashion. I suppose as well as treating yourself I'll just say that you're likely to change a lot, without even noticing. It's human nature. I'm sure the me from even a few years ago wouldn't recognise my current incarnation, and who knows who I'll be in a few years. But I can't wait to see (and probably cringe over all my current outfits!)..</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
It seems only appropriate that my last summery outfit is one of the lightest in my wardrobe - I'd noticed I had become rather attached to my darker hues and wanted to shake things up a little. I <i>know </i>that black is classic, and if it ain't broke you don't fix it, but there's nothing wrong with mixing things up a little. I barely ever wear jeans because I feel lazy in them, but these light pink Topshop babies are anything but lazy (trust me, the effort to get them on and off is like a full cardio session), especially when matched with my silver sandals and fave print kimono. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm sad to say it's time to pack up the summer wardrobe, I've already kissed goodbye to my co-ords and am not anticipating being bare-legged any time soon! But keep your eyes peeled on the blog for me taking on the transitional, temperamental autumn weather (damn you, West Midlands!) and hopefully a few new pieces when student loan boosts my bank account. Of course, that's all meant for studious things, but a few treats make the coursework go down a little easier! And that's why I haven't posted in a while - I've been trying to gather myself for second year of uni!</div>

If you've paid any attention to the A/W15 catwalk shows you'll know that monochrome madness is setting in - from Diane Von Furstenburg to Mugler this perennial classic cropped up, and whether it is worn simple and rebellious as at Saint Laurent or in a geometric, optical illusion in the style of Valentino or Pucci it seems you can't go wrong with black and white this season. A few years ago I would have hated it (I was all about colour, colour, colour), but now I'm embracing monochrome with open arms. Let's be honest, I've been loving it since last winter and now everyone else is too! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
That said, I'm trying to be a bit more economical and ethical with my purchasing, so I won't be racing down to the shops to pick up a few throwaway trend pieces - luckily my love for black and white means my wardrobe is already primed to make monochrome one of my key looks this season. I'm not totally into minimalism though, so my first take is a bit seventies, a bit clashy, and a bit classic all at the same time. Monochrome lets you play around with prints and textures, the lack of colour allowing for depth in other aspects, and I think that's why I love it. So to kick off my love affair with this trend I've matched my Topshop houndstooth trousers with a recently found vintage silk shirt (as much as I'm not a seventies chick, I fell for this), keeping the accessories simple. Personally, I think the key to print clashing is to keep everything else simple and let two or three statement prints do the talking. Finally, I suppose I am saying hello to autumn - I always darken my style as the days grow shorter.. </div>

I was lucky enough to spend most of my Friday exploring Banksy's latest work - and probably the best art installation I've ever seen - Dismaland. The "bemusement park" itself is in the old Weston-Super-Mare lido (the old fountain remains) and features work by not only Banksy but Damien Hirst, Ed Hall, Leigh Mulley, Dietrich Vegner, Jani Leinonen and many more. Here I've captured my favourite pieces, which were suprisingly not the most obvious attractions. Banksy's Cinderella castle and Ben Long's stallion were incredible to look at, and I couldn't help but love the faded glory of the ferris wheel, but I found myself drawn to the details - posters, signs, the old playground rides, Wasted Rita's fly posters.. My personal highlights were Death in a bumper car (being spun to Stayin' Alive!) and Jenny Holzer's billboards - she is one of my favourite modern artists and I find her statements and inflammatory essays incredibly thought-provoking.<br />
<br />
If I were to describe Dismaland in three words the first would in fact be 'thought-provoking', followed by 'inspiringly dismal'. A few minutes in there and my mind was whirring with ideas about Banksy's clear anti-consumer commentary, and the more I explored the more I thought. So many issues are skated over at the moment and here we found them cleverly presented yet clear - immigration, consumerism, cruelty.. Banksy himself was said to have attended and heard people saying "But what does it do?" about some of the installations - clearly they're not getting the point. The entire advertising of this is one giant art piece, not <i>really</i> a seaside amusement, and you've got to dig a little deeper than that.. Hopefully, even if people don't understand it, their interest will be piqued and they can start looking into the meaning behind some of the artwork and become a little more conscious of the world around them - I know I've already got some issues to look into!<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
I could write another post about the dying of summer, the way the grey skies remind me more of October than of August, or waving goodbye to the holidays and getting ready to head into uni again, but I feel like getting on my feminist high horse for a bit. I can't claim to understand what some women go through since I'm hardly part of a minority, but it feels like I am constantly bombarded with instances of misogyny and women being given the short end of the stick. From needing to have "a man" on to work in bars to girls being sent home from school for showing their shoulders, from sexual assault being blamed on clothing to an obvious wage gap, there's always something to raise about the clear inequality between men and women (and it gets increasingly evident if you look into the treatment of minorities, especially trans women). I could probably write a dissertation on how frustrating I find the result of this natural lottery - being born a woman places you at an immediate disadvantage. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>"For most of history, anonymous was a woman." - </i>Virginia Woolf</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As well as being an incredible writer, Virginia Woolf produced one of my favourite quotes because it's true that it has always been safer to be anonymous than to be a woman. Or at least up until her time it was. I like to think we have come a long way: in the last hundred years we have won the vote (and eventually started to use it), we've got out of the kitchen, we've burned our bras and started to speak for ourselves, we've become powerful in many ways, and we now boast some of the most influential people on the planet. But there's still a long road to traverse before we become equal. And that's what I'm here for - equality. I don't hate men, I just want to feel equal. I want to be equally safe walking home at night, I want to be paid the same for the same work, I want to be judged upon my abilities rather than my appearance, and I want us to share the same rules and restrictions because there are far too many double standards. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'll try to stop myself from descending into "angry feminist" territory (a description which annoys me because it belittles feminism) because I'm sure I'm just another girl complaining on the internet. But most of us don't have the power to change the world individually, so maybe if we all keep complaining we can make a difference together. The wheels are in motion, and it feels like a new wave of feminism is building, and it's exciting.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Finally, a postscript, that I imagine this will be one of my last summery outfits.. and I'm sad because it feels like I barely got to break out my warm-weather wardrobe! I love this kimono and I've worn it a handful of times. I've even gone back to black already. But I enjoyed floating around in this to go out to lunch, and if there's even another peek of sun I'll be back in my summery ensembles - but I won't hold my breath.</div>

This typically awkward British weather has me in a bit of a spin lately - I can't plan my outfits because whenever I do I end up unable to wear what I intended! I'm sure this falls greatly into the realm of <i>first world problems</i>, but I've had some cute outfits planned which have ended up being ridiculously impractical and have had to be sidelined. I suppose I'm just hoping we get another last minute burst of summer so I can wear them before resigning myself to another oncoming autumn..<br />
<br />
Honestly, it felt like autumn on Monday when I went out in this outfit because even though it is nominally August I had to wear a coat and tights. I may be annoyed at having to wear my autumn wardrobe so early, but I've remembered how much I love it. Yes, I'm praying for a little more sun, but now I'm anticipating golden leaves, snuggly jumpers and opportunities to wear this coat again... Despite being petite I love a long coat, especially in this pastel shade which keeps me feeling chirpy even as the skies darken. I also rediscovered this velvet skirt recently lurking in my wardrobe - if I keep making finds like these it will be a lot easier to keep my spending in check!<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Jokingly or not, I've heard the term <i>'fashion victim'</i> bandied about and it's become quite a cliche. It's all too easy to get caught up in the idea of fast fashion, the seemingly never-ending cycle of seasons with increasingly quick drops - there seems to be an obsession these days with having the best, newest thing as soon as it comes out. It's not just in fashion. Everything seems disposable, made to be bought, squealed over, used up, and either thrown out or replaced within a few months or years. I feel like I've been vocal lately about avoiding this for the sake of others, but how about for the sake of ourselves?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Unsurprisingly, most of us don't have the budget for this kind of constant purchasing and it can be quite depressing. Levels of clinical depression and anxiety have risen with the increasingly fast, consumer society, so I don't think I'm out of place saying that whatever the adverts say it won't make us happier to buy buy buy! The best way to feel better and happier in ourselves and our lives is to escape this constant pressure to have the latest items, the need to impress with newness. I reached this point a few years ago when I realised that paying my bills and eating dinner has to take priority over it-bags, and honestly I feel much better when I just wear what I want regardless of whether it's exactly on trend. Sometimes to be honest I really hate certain trends (pool sliders - <i>ugh!</i>) and I'm never going to give up my personal taste just because something is a "must-have"! And I always find my favourite looks come from people who don't follow fashion - 'fashion fades, style is eternal' - because trends die in months, but beautiful things will last a lifetime. So, after a bit of rambling on, I'd say it's easy to become a fashion "victim" as such, but it's far more stylish to buy what you like and wear what makes you feel good. Rewear your favourites, ignore trends you hate, and develop your own personal style instead of blindly following the crowd. It's difficult to do, but you'll feel ten times better when you escape the pressure.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This outfit is one of the reasons I rambled on in that vein today - it has become one of my go-to combinations over the past few weeks, and it mixes cute classics that might not all be totally current but make a look that feels fresh and festival-ready (if only I was going to one!). This dress is one of my favourite easy-wear pieces, it's totally versatile and florals will never go out of style! To prep for this incredibly temperamental English weather we're having I opted for my current favourites - the denim jacket and cute metallic sandals with socks! </div>

Outfit - Topshop<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm currently sat staring down the mountains of clothes that I need to organise - to hang, to pack, to take this weekend, to store for winter, to retire from the summer - and it's honestly a bit overwhelming. I can't believe quite how much I have accumulated, and the scariest part is that I don't really want to say goodbye to anything! I've always said that as soon as I throw something out it comes back in style, and then when it comes to choosing which clothes accompany me back to uni I struggle even more because I just know that whatever I leave behind will be the very outfit I want to wear. And this leads me on to wondering why I feel such a need to keep buying more?! Of course, I know why.. I love new, fresh things, and I love the feeling of wearing a new outfit, and I get so easily bored of the things that I own. I suppose I have fast fashion to thank for this, because I've grown up knowing I can have new things every week, and a myriad of outfits hanging in my wardrobe(s) to choose from. I can't even imagine how it was before high street shops and mass production.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
But I think I would like to. Not only is the current fashion cycle so unsustainable in terms of cheap labour, our natural resources, and creativity itself, but I honestly am getting quite fed up with it. Everything becomes a little easier when you stop focussing on needing the latest look as soon as it drops, because frankly it's impossible to keep up these days! I'll never say I'll stop buying, but I'm less and less interested in buying things that are only on trend for a few months - it's a colossal waste of money, time and resources. I want to buy more carefully, and develop a wardrobe that's not about trends but about my own style. I've noticed that the people who look the best don't follow trends, but dress for their body, their inspiration, their mood, their own self expression, and that's where I want to be. Before this sounds too over-the-top and like I'm up on my high horse ready to boycott the high street, don't worry I'm still in love with the affordable end of the spectrum! I think the entirely-Topshop ensemble above should prove that.... I just mean that I'm going invest in my clothes, instead of buying things off-the-cuff. If I don't fall in love with something, I don't want it in my wardrobe.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This outfit above features two of the three items of clothing I've bought in the last two months - a classic denim jacket, and this gorgeous pleated midi skirt. I fell for the skirt as soon as I saw it, circling the store until I gave in and tried it on. I've been wary of midis for so long that now it feels like a whole new world of skirts is open to me, and I'm getting a bit obsessed with this length! Colour was another big draw for me here, because I'm quite girlie at times and this pearlescent shimmery hue reminded me simultaneously of mother of pearl and mermaids, and fairy lights and tinsel - expect to see me wearing this a lot in the coming months! </div>

Print used to be one of the biggest features in my wardrobe, but as I've grown older I've simplified things a little - meaning that this print clash, which would have been so safe when I was seventeen, is pushing the boat out a little now! Clashing prints is always a bit controversial because it can look so good, but it can also go so badly.. I think the key is to keep one of the prints simple and classic, then pair it with something a little bolder. I knew I wanted to play up the gorgeous floral pattern on this skirt, so I kept my top half fairly classic with a monochrome check. This outfit also falls into my failsafe category of 'retro with a twist', with the off-shoulder top, midi skirt and costume jewel necklace, all of which are staples in my wardrobe. If you know me at all then you know I'll pick retro over modern and vintage over minimal any day of the week!<br />
<br />
Also I've got another (slightly sad) life update for you all: I've graduated from Conde Nast College after four amazing weeks! I met so many incredibly creative and talented people, really came to love life in London, and was so motivated and inspired by the course itself, so I'm sad to leave but so happy that I spent my summer at CNC. And now I'm back flitting between Birmingham and Somerset for the remainder of my summer.. I'm sorry about the inconsistent posting, but I had to set up the wifi at my new house in Birmingham - and it's been a busy few months!<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
It's no secret that vintage shopping is one of my favourite activities, and I have previously posted my tips on how to buy vintage (<a href="http://foreveranoverdresser.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/how-to-shop-vintage.html" target="_blank">here</a>). But now I'm more interested in <i>why</i> it's such a good idea, and honestly it has so many benefits. I hear countless people say they don't like the idea of wearing somebody else's clothes, but a quick wash and there's honestly no difference. I fully understand the appeal of new clothes, believe me, but vintage has had a revival for a reason - I'd say it's the best way to go. On the most superficial level it's probably the only way to make sure nobody else will have your outfit (unless you can actually afford haute couture that is!). Since fast fashion really kicked off in the last few decades it's been nearly impossible to be entirely individual, and however much you love an item it really does lose it's special quality when seen on six other people. Vintage is entirely unique, and that also makes it a lot of fun to shop for because you never know what you might find! It's also usually a lot friendlier to your bank balance, especially if you mix shopping in "official" vintage stores and hitting your local charity shop, which makes it easier to live on a budget and easier to try new styles.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Going in a little deeper, I will just say that this week I watched 'The True Cost' and was truly shocked at what goes on in the production of clothing and just how damaging the industry can be to people and to our planet. Obviously we can't boycott clothing, but it has me thinking that with the sheer volume of secondhand clothes around it isn't necessary to be producing new product at such a high volume and such an unsustainable speed. So maybe, just maybe, buying vintage can help. There are so many beautiful clothes out there already that are just dying to be worn! Reusing what we already have makes so much more sense than churning out more and simply trying to find ways to get rid of the old items. Giving something a new lease of life can be fun, can help you find your own style, and it takes a little pressure off the industry. I'm not trying to say we can't - or shouldn't - buy new, I'm just advocating a healthy balance of vintage and new, and maybe a little more consideration when we buy because clothing should not be seen as disposable!</div>

When in England I try to resist such obvious touristing, but I quite literally couldn't stop myself! I got carried away with the excitement of being at the place where dreams are made (mine at least) - aka Vogue House, home to the style bible that is British Vogue. As part of the CNC Intensive Summer Course we popped over for drinks - prosecco anyone?! - and to soak up the atmosphere. I must admit we all probably looked a bit silly taking photos as all the people who <i>actually</i> work there walked in and out, but it was exciting. It was also a perfect opportunity to finally wear this gorgeous print dress that I have been saving for a while, ever since I picked it up in the Topshop sale! This really was the definition of difficult dressing because when contemplating my outfit in the morning I had to not only dress for drinks and the evening, but I had to combat the early morning chill and be comfortable enough for a day of classes at the college. Thankfully my latest purchase was this casual denim jacket which was perfect for daytime and also fended off the cold in the evening as I navigated the train home.. </div>

<br />
Varying slightly from my outfit-oriented posts, I wanted to share some photos from my excursion to the Tate Modern with the CNC crowd - we went on Thursday, specifically to see the Sonia Delauney exhibition but of course we explored the main gallery spaces too. I have to admit that a lot of modern art goes over my head, that I don't completely understand it, but above are some of my favourite pieces (and a totally unposed shot of me in contemplation..). My absolute favourite was the Warhol 'Marilyn' piece - two of my favourite cultural icons combined! Unfortunately we weren't allowed to photograph the Delauney exhibition, but it has got me thinking... Can fashion be art?<br />
<br />
Specifically this week we have spent time on the influence art has on fashion, and that has led me to the definitive belief that fashion cannot be understood without art. I won't go into any detail since I am currently working on the effect of art on fashion as part of the course, but we debated whether fashion could be art and it really has me divided. Having seen the Savage Beauty exhibition there can be no doubt that some designers are artists working with clothes as their medium, but I don't think it follows that all fashion is art - nobody could argue that a Ralph Lauren polo shirt is art. Many designers, such as Lagerfeld, will say that they merely make clothes and draw reference from art but do not create art. Personally I do not agree. A great designer's clothing and collection is his masterpiece, and his catwalk show his gallery. I even believe that the streets can be galleries, with street style increasingly important.<br />
<br />
This leads me to think that art may be found in different aspects of fashion. In the more basic, wearable clothes that in themselves do not make a statement, often it is the craftsmanship and construction; sometimes the runway shows become almost an art installation (as many of McQueen's were); sometimes it is the consumer who may hang a piece on the wall as art, or put outfits together with such creative flair that it moves beyond merely dressing; sometimes the clothing is simply art. I don't see how anyone could look at some of the couture collections and deny fashion as an art form - it is creative, thought provoking, innovative, and often shapes other areas of design and creation.<br />

<br />
Featuring a much more relaxed look from Vienna last week, proving that on holiday I really do simplify things - exemplified most by my pared back makeup and lack of jewellery. This skirt is usually far more dressed up, but I love it so much that I had to bring it with me and wear it! This feels like it's going to be quite a 'life-update' blog post because I haven't been able to post much in a while, and may not be able to since I am currently so busy studying at the Conde Nast College of Fashion & Design! I'm doing the 4-week Summer Intensive Course and I don't think any of us were prepared for just how intense it would be..<br />
<br />
I won't tell you all of what I'm doing because if you want all the information I highly recommend the course! Suffice it to say that it's been five days and I've already heard talks and lectures from some of the Vogue fashion team, Angelica Cheung, Dr Neri Karra, and Suzanne Lussier - it's been fascinating, informative, and I'm so excited to go in every day. The projects and technical skills (such as photoshop) are quite challenging, but also stimulating, and it's really confirming for me that I want to work in fashion. It's a fast-paced, exciting industry that appeals to my creative mind, my love of art and words, and it has always drawn me - but one week at Conde Nast and I've got my heart set on it!<br />
<br />
I have one serious point to make now - fashion is not frivolous. If you talk to anyone who works in the industry (whether theoretically, designing, publishing, styling etc) or even pick up a copy of Vogue and read the articles you can see that it is a pivotal part of popular culture, commenting on the key issues in society today while cleverly linking fashion to art, history and all aspects of culture. Also let's not forget it's a multimillion dollar industry headed by some incredible people with genius minds for business - it combines art with precision and marketing. The influence and insight of fashion is incredible, and does not deserve to be treated as some shallow fun. Yes it is fun, but it's so much more. And just because you enjoy dressing well does not make you shallow or frivolous either!<br />
